A History Of The Theatre District
Originally, the San Francisco Theatre District was a small two-block area bordered by Taylor, Sutter, Powell, and Geary Streets. However, today the District covers around 10 blocks. Many of the city’s original theatres opened between 1910 and 1930 as new neighborhoods quickly began to emerge. Each theater has its own unique history. For instance, the Golden Gate Theatre was built in 1920. Over the years, the theatre has been home to people such as The Andrew Sisters, Louis Armstrong, Judy Garland, Nat King, and even The Three Stooges.
Transportation Options
The Theatre District is a central location. As such, it’s easy to access regardless of what part of the city you are traveling from. There are busses including the:
5, 7, 8, 9, 30, 45, 91.
Alternatively, you can also use BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) if you are traveling from the East Bay. You can take BART to Powell Street Station. This is just a couple of blocks southeast of the closest theaters.
If you are arriving from South Bay, then you can explore Caltrain. However, you will need to ensure that you get a bus once you get to the city to reach the Theatre District. You can take either the 30 or 45 to Market street.
It’s not recommended that you drive for two reasons. First, parking is expensive, and second, the streets are often incredibly busy. However, if you do decide to drive there is Ace Parking and Turquoise Parking LLC.
